The Ides of March

The big brooding Victorian sat towering over the small town of Hillcrest. It seems like it was only yesterday when we, a group of adventurous kids, ventured up that long driveway pretending not to be scared. But we were plenty scared. It was Jock, my best friend, who saw it first. He couldn’t tell us what he saw, all he could do was scream. And that scream… it still haunts me to this day. We were just kids back then, fearless and curious. We would often sneak into the abandoned mansion, daring each other to go further and explore the dark corners of the house. But one day, something changed. Something that made us all run out of that house and never look back. As I stand here, staring at the old mansion, memories come flooding back. Memories of Jock, who I thought died years ago. It was a tragic accident, they said. His body was never found. But now, here he is, standing in front of me, looking just like he did when we were kids. But something is different about him. His eyes, they seem darker, colder. “Jock?” I call out, my voice trembling with fear and confusion. He turns to look at me, a sinister smile spreading across his face. “Hello Troy,” he says in a voice that sends shivers down my spine. I can’t believe my eyes. Is this really Jock or some kind of twisted trick? But before I can even process my thoughts, he lunges at me, his hands gripping my throat tightly. I struggle to break free, but his strength is unnaturally strong. “You shouldn’t have come here, Troy,” he hisses, his eyes glinting with malice. I manage to push him off and run towards the nearest house, banging on the door for help. But as I turn back, I see Jock disappearing into thin air. My mind is racing, trying to make sense of what just happened. Is Jock a ghost? A demon? Or something else entirely? All I know is that I need to find answers and put an end to whatever this is before it’s too late. Because one thing is for sure, Jock is no longer my friend. He’s my worst nightmare.
